The purpose of Internet Marketing is to increase the number of people visiting your website. The more visitors you get, the more sales or leads you’ll likely get. Whether you’re selling products or services, or whether your offer them online or offline (a physical store), the end goal is the same: to increase your revenues.
Internet Marketing is not one thing. It’s a set of several tactics that each work in a different way. One or more tactics may be right for your business or organization. It depends on two things: the kinds of products or services you offer and how and why people buy the product or service you offer.
Internet Marketing is a broad term and means different things to different people. Here are some activities that may fit under the Internet Marketing umbrella:

Today most of the attention and internet marketing resources are channeled to the first three areas listed above. The first two, search engine optimization and paid search fall under the broad category known as search marketing. As the name implies, search marketing relates to raising a website’s visibility on search engines (like those on Google.com, Yahoo.com and MSN.com).
